Each country has its own unique culture, like the soul of a body. It is very wise to respect the local culture and allow yourself to follow the customs of the land. Even if you don’t agree with this, honour your role as a guest in someone else’s home; that is what smart people do.
Thai culture may seem similar to Western culture, but that is only on the surface. Here are few special cultural tips to help you during your stay in Thailand:
- DO respect all Buddha images, no matter how big or small, ruined or not; they are all regarded as sacred. Do not climb on them or do anything that would show lack of respect. Always take off your shoes and hat before entering the temples. Do not sit on the floor with the soles of your feet pointing to Buddha.
- DO wear respectable clothes in the street or public area, not short hot-pants, or mini-skirts. You won´t be expected to dress to the same standard, but at the very least, cover your knees and shoulders, especially when you visit a Buddhist temple or religious sites.
- DON’T show Public Display of Affection: Thais in general do not kiss or show kissing, cuddling or holding hands, and any similar behaviour in public is frowned upon.
- DON’T always expect anything will go as you wish. Keep your patience, stay calm, be cool and be flexible. Go with the flow!
PLEASE, BE RESPECTFUL. This is extremely important in Thai culture. If you are not sure what to do, just observe the Thais and do the same!
